Kathmandu, May 23 :
Nepali Congress and CPN-UML Wednesday demanded resignation from Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai as per the 5-point agreement and flayed him for seeking the extension of the Constituent Assembly term.
UCPN-Maoist and United Democratic Madhesi Front, however, rejected the demand.
At a meeting of four parties, NC and UML said the new constitution should be promulgated by the May 27 deadline.
Talking to the media people, Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that NC and UML asked the PM to resign and allow formation of another government under the leadership of NC in keeping with the recent 5-point deal of the parties.
After the meeting, UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal said the main priority was to promulgate the new constitution within May 27. "If the Maoists and Madhesi parties want CA term extension, Prime Minister Bhattarai should resign before May 27."
After the four party meeting, the NC Central Committee meeting and UML Standing Committee held separate meetings. The parties formally demanded the Prime Minister’s resignation as a precondition for other decisions.
The meeting of UCPN-Maoist and Madhesi Front held at Singha Darbar decided that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai would not step down until the completion of the constitution writing process.
Emerging from the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Maoist vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha said that PM Bhattarai would resign only after the Constitution writing process completed.
Shrestha accused Congress and UML of hatching conspiracies to dissolve the CA.
He also blamed NC and UML did a volte face on Tuesday’s agreement for CA extension by three months.
The meeting of the four major parties could not take place for the second time Wednesday as they showed serious differences over the agreement.
