Although foreign employment is regarded as the biggest earner of remittances in the nation, it has lately emerged as a major cause behind family breakdowns, separation, divorces and property dispute among many Nepali families.
If the present trend of family breakdowns continues for long, the foreign employment will invite many social problems in the nation, various stakeholders on Tuesday said.
Speaking at the interaction programme organised at Bharatpur, the stakeholders who are working against human trafficking said that although financial benefits were praiseworthy, the foreign employment was also causing serious problems for several Nepalese.
They said that along with the rise in foreign employment, the cases of divorce and marital discord had also been increasing among the families of those who were working abroad.
Such discord can not change the family structure at present, it can nevertheless directly affect children’s future, they said.
District Judge, Lekh Nath Dhakal, who has been looking after the cases at the non-criminal bench, said that 80 per cent of cases are related to divorce and added that the foreign employment is the major cause behind most of family breakdowns.
He said after 25 years, with the rising cases of divorce, the foreign employment will create serious social problems in the Nepali society.
District Justice, Bhola Nath Chaulagain said that the foreign employment is somehow seen as a national problem. It has generated many social and family problems, he added.
He said the wrong practice of foreign employment has invited serious problem in Nepali society. Extramarital affairs of spouses who have migrated abroad are behind the increasing number of cases of divorce, he added.
Assistant Chief District Officer, Siva Ram Goalal said that the problem is arising due to the lack of awareness among the concerned persons.
Police Sub-Inspector of District Police Office, Chitwan, Bhupal Bahadur Bhandari said total six cases of human trafficking were filed in the office from financial 2066-69 B.S.
The cases of divorces also entails with the demand of property. The police stations are flooded with cases of property demand and accusation of infidelity of partners abroad, he added.
The individual working overseas often witness family discord and bitterness in marital life, said Bhandari. Overseas employment has given rise to anomalies in the Nepali society, he added.
Bhandari said during the raid of different hotels and restaurants of Chitwan, police found that the wives of those husbands, who were working in abroad, were involved in different illegal activities.
According to the participants presented at the programme, most of the divorce cases are directly
related with sexual and financial issues.
Advocate, Phool Maya Ranabhat, said that many Nepali had been facing various problems in foreign land as they lacked even general information about the foreign land where they were going to work and earn. .
In some cases wives are involved in extramarital affairs and tied nuptial knot with someone else along with the property of their husbands. In many cases, wives are often suspected of having extra marital affairs while the husbands were away.
These are the major causes for the family separation, said advocate Krishna Bhakta Pokharel.
