SC stay order wrong : Maoists
By A Staff Reporter

Kathmandu, May 25:

The UCPN-Maoist has decided to stage a people’s revolt in case the Constituent Assembly is dissolved without promulgating the new constitution. The party said that the stay order of the Supreme Court not to extend the CA term was wrong.

The party has termed the stay order as a ‘political intervention’ that will lead to a political void after the dissolution of the CA.

A standing committee meeting of the Maoist party held at the residence of party chairman Puspha Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said that the SC stay order against the proposal registered at the Legislature-Parliament for extension of the CA tenure was wrong because it does help the country to come out of the transition.

However, the Maoist leaders reiterated that the party would continue its efforts to promulgate the new constitution within May 27.

If the promulgation of the constitution is not possible, the party would opt for people’s revolt, they warned.

The meeting was held a day after the SC stay order. Maoist leaders claimed that the SC failed to understand the government efforts to seek consensus for the new constitution.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Maoist vice-chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Narayankaji Shrestha said that the proposal of extending the CA term was a compulsion to prevent the void that may be created in case the new constitution was not promulgated by May 27.

"The recent SC’s stay order has come without recognising the government efforts for consensus based constitution. So, the Maoist party has taken it as wrong," Shrestha said.

The Maoist party is ready to implement the 6-14 province proposal suggested by the State Restructuring Commission earlier. But there can be no compromise on identity based federal provinces, Shrestha said.

According to Shrestha, the Maoist party would stage a people’s revolt for pro-people constitution with identity and capacity based federalism jointly with the United Madheshi Democratic Front, Broader Madhesi Front, Indigenous, Janajati, Muslims, Dalits and other groups if the CA is dissolved without any outcome.
