Are Our Films Becoming Dirtier?

As predicted earlier, Loot and Chapali Height succeeded to become trendsetting movies of ailing Kollywood. The two movies became not only the box-office hits but also inspired other filmmakers, especially of the young generation, to give up making traditional formula films.

According to its producer Madhav Wagle, Loot collected Rs. 35 million in total and it is still being screened in two halls—Gopi and Ganga - of Kathmandu. The amount collected by Loot is surely higher, probably the highest ever collected by a Nepali movie. However, Wagle said that the media reports that it collected Rs. 40 to 50 million were baseless. The business of Chapali Height was also highly encouraging although sources close to producer Arjun Kumar claimed that he was yet to receive the money from the halls.

"Only the wallets of hall owners not of producer Arjun Kumar became thicker," the sources claimed.

Currently, Arjun Kumar is showing his movie in India.

The two films not only helped revive the movie markets in Nepal but also drew flaks from the conservative filmmakers and authorities designated to work for the development of the local films.

The traditional filmmakers claimed that the two movies encouraged the filmmakers to make indecent movies while the Film Development Board has introduced a provision to censor the scripts of the new films in order to control the production of dirty pictures.

Senior filmmakers like Nir Shah had suggested that films like Chapali Height should not be treated like the mainstream movies. "There should be separate halls to show the porn," he said in a function of FDB recently.

Of course, the success of the two films has led to a massive public debate in the recent months which is obviously a good sign. Until now Nepali films have not become an issue of public debate.

However, it seems that many people from within and outside the industry have made their opinions without watching the movies and accused Loot and Chapali Height of promoting the making of dirty pictures. For example, Loot cannot be considered a vulgar film from any angle. It is as decent as the mainstream movies except the use of language which we hear everywhere. Also it is not a film relating to love and sex. It is purely a story of the youths who become ready to do anything to make fast bucks. In fact, the use of everyday language is what has made Loot livelier. Yes, Chapali Height, is a story of love and hatred having some bold scenes. But they are also not indecent as claimed by its critics.

One of the important features of the two films is that they are free from the scattered ideas which are too common in the mainstream movies. Loot revolves around the efforts of the youths to loot a bank whereas Chapali Height is done by only three characters in a single venue.

Yes, following the success of these two flickers, the industry witnessed a flood of movies focused on sex. The Last Kiss, ATM and the Night Queen are some of the examples. The objectionable promos of these films have dragged Loot and Chapali Height to controversy. The promos of Chapali Height were also not free from controversies but the moviegoers did not find such scenes in the screen. In fact, copying others is the old habit of our filmmakers. They have resorted to making films on sex only because they knew that only films on such issues could bring fortune like Loot did. But not all films made on similar storyline could lure the audiences to the halls. Creativity matters more. However, our filmmakers hardly give importance to creativity and keep on copying. In the past they used to copy Bollywood films, now they are copying the locals, which should, in a sense, be taken in a positive note.

However, Wagle said that it was wrong to blame his Loot for encouraging the making of increasing number of indecent films.

"We have used the language that our sons speak in colleges and homes in Loot. We have not included any vulgar scenes," he said.

Inspired by the success of his Loot, Wagle is now busy making Chhadke. Now the shooting of the Chhadke is going in the full swing in Chitwan. He said it would be a multi-star movie. Interestingly, he has had a new director—Nigam Shrestha, the assistant director in Loot, for his new movie whereas he has repeated a few actors of Loot including Saugat Malla and Dayahang Rai. Theatre icon Sunil Pokhrel, Namrata Shrestha, Arpan Tamang (protagonist of Batch No. 16) and Robin Tamang are other actors of his new movie. Wagle claimed that Chhadke will be better than Loot.

In fact, Loot has proved that theatre artistes perform better than the professional film artistes. In this sense, one can assume that Chhadke will surely be another trendsetting Nepali movie.

Now that many filmmakers in Nepal are making films on the issues of sex, it will not be a surprise if any filmmaker makes ‘Dirty Picture’ based on the life of Jessica Khadka. Milan Luthria of Bollywood made it basing on the life of Silk Smitha. Of course, there is no dearth of Vidhya Balan in Kollywood!
