Kathmandu, July 6:
The recruitment and selection process of the former Maoist combatants was obstructed Friday over the disputes related with their age.
Nepal Army halted the process for the time being after the combatants protested against the physical check carried out on them.
Confirming the postponement of the process, spokesperson of Nepal Army Ramindra Chhetri said, "The process has been halted for now. It will resume soon."
The combatants said that they objected to the recruitment process as it was not going in line with the integration as agreed by the political parties.
They staged protests at the main gate of the third division of Shaktikhor cantonment.
According to our Chitwan correspondent Shanta Adhikari, battalion co-commander of Dineshrmaji Memorial Brigade Dhalak Bahadur Moktan said that they warned of launching a protest against the move to take them into the recruitment, not the integration, process.
"Nepal Army started measuring our chests, checking our health and age even after the United Nations had verified our fitness as per the international standards," he said.
The combatants also demanded that those opting for voluntary retirement should be given the money in a lump sum.
Earlier, it was decided to give the combatants opting for retirement the sum in two installments.
The combatants who reached the cantonments dancing and singing with hopes of immediate integration started chanting slogans against the recruitment process.
Nepal Army had started the recruitment process from Wednesday after preparing the selection criteria and the curriculum.
The selection process in the 4th division in Nawalparasi was also obstructed for the same reason.
A Nepal Army team had distributed forms to 172 out of the total number of 302 combatants of the 4th division, according to our Nawalparasi correspondent Homraj Ranabhat.
Seventy four combatants had filled the forms.
The process was also obstructed in the 5th division.
According to our correspondent Tikaram Basnet, although 80 combatants took the forms, none of them filled it.
