Some the dry season and the sales of the cold drinks and ice-cream see a boom in the city. Although many people in the capital and elsewhere have not yet stopped wearing sweaters and jackets, they could be seen sipping cold drinks and enjoying ice-creams. Thanks to the young people’s growing craze for cold drinks and ice-cream! Moreover, enjoying street food has lately been a more than a fashion among the youths. The crowd that we see in and around the open street-food-stalls of the city is a testimony to this.
However, the people who satiate their passions for food by enjoying such food and drinks hardly think about the quality and hygiene of the food they gobble. As a result, some of them fall prey to diarrohoea and other food-related problems. Although it is very simple, many find it difficult to improve their food habit and continue to consume junk and other unhealthy foods. Moreover, many parents find it difficult to stop their children from eating junk foods that their children come to know through TV ad. Although many schools of the valley and elsewhere do not allow their students to have junk foods like chow-chow for tiffin, most parents tend to violate this food rule only because of their wards’ craze for junk foods.
Some parents unaware about the impact of the poor quality foods on the health of their wards, feed them junks foods at homes as it is easier and quicker to prepare them. Indeed, it is human nature that not only the children, even the grown-ups tend to develop a bad food habit. For example, many cannot give up consuming alcohol, smoking and taking fatty food albeit they know well that they are not good for their health. And the bad food habit is responsible for the cause of both non-communicable and communicable diseases.
Now that the dry season has already begun and the risks of spreading the communicable diseases are high.
As such, the people should be more cautious about the foods and their quality they enjoy. Moreover, the mechanism to monitor the food items sold in the markets, that earned a big applaud in October last year, has been in hibernation since the arrival of winter for no apparent reason leaving the consumers to find themselves the qualities of the foods available in the markets. While TV ads are there to make the consumers enjoy unhealthy foods and drinks, lackadaisical attitudes among the authorities designated to control the productions and sales of the unhealthy foods and drinks are responsible for the increasing sales and consumption of unhygienic and unhealthy foods and drinks. As such, the only remedy to this problem is self awareness among the consumers about the quality of such foods and drinks. Unless the consumers themselves get aware, they cannot develop healthy food habits and help control the spread epidemics like diarrhea and cholera, which are common in summer in Nepal.
