Time For Yourself
Prayash Raj Koirala

Are we comfortable with our lives? Do we really live a happy and content life that we cherish? Obviously, the answer is a big ‘No’. We are never satisfied with our lifestyle. After all, happiness and prosperity are not perpetual. For they come and go with time and situations in life.

With increasing competition today, our human life is more busy and chaotic than in the past. Time, for us, is the most valuable thing. If we have time, we have everything - money, a good lifestyle and a content life. Hence, to live a more fulfilled and prosperous life, we tend to give limited time to our family and relationships, employing more time running behind what we call ‘success’. So, here is another question: Do we really achieve happiness and a prosperous life running after ‘success’?

Looking at the lives of many of us who are married, it is even more difficult for us to maintain the poise between family and work. We have to look after our children and also maintain a smooth relationship with our friends, family and relatives. There is certainly ‘homework’ after work for many of us. While trying to set this balance between our personal and professional life, we tend to forget the basic mantra of cheerfulness in life - time for ourselves.

Work after work is obviously a lot of stress to everyone. May be it is a gathering with friends or relatives, but it is tiring when this becomes a regular routine as a part of socialising. Many of us might not have realised the importance of giving time to ourselves, though this has a huge positive impact on our mental health.

Staying alone, listening to the music of our own liking relax the brain and recharge our energy and spirit. As a popular quote of Muhammad Ali - the famous boxer - goes, "Silence is golden when you can’t think of a good answer." These moments provide us an opportunity to think over our problems and give us a solution to them.

Once, Archimedes, the Greek mathematician, was stuck with a tough problem which was challenged to him by the king of Syracuse. The king had asked, how can it be confirmed that the laurel crown of the king is made of pure gold? Tired of thinking of an answer, Archimedes decided to relax for some time and take a bath. Suddenly, the solution incubated while bathing. He then got so excited that he even forgot to dress and ran to the king to answer that objects of different densities displace different volumes of water.

Taking a deep breath and staying alone for some time is also known to be one of the best ways to overcome anger and stress. Going for a walk also provides us a pleasure. A death or loss of someone close to us can be traumatic. During these moments, the sorrow can be trounced substantially by sitting alone and calming ourselves. In addition, some emotions which cannot be expressed or the pains which are hidden inside can also be defeated during these lonely moments.

Hence, take a break at times from the daily monotonous chorus, empty your mind, feel yourself and cherish the beauty of life for a while. Certainly, the positive vive within us can be felt, and life can be the gift of god, once again.
