New statute should ensure press freedom, says NC President

Kathmandu, May 3: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala said on Thursday that democracy cannot be institutionalised in absence of free press. A press statement issued by Koirala on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, said that he was committed to establish press freedom and added that the new constitution should ensure press freedom for sustainable democratic system. He said that media had played big role to make the democratic movement of Nepal a success. President Koirala extended his gratitude to the freedom fighters, who laid down their lives for the cause of press freedom and freedom of expression. He urged the media sector to put pressures for the promulgation a democratic constitution which will guarantee the freedom of press. “Free press is the basis of democracy. It has a crucial role to inform the citizens and build a transparent society,” Koirala said in the press statement. Koirala said that his party was committed to guarantee press freedom in the new constitution and that his party would never compromise with any forces regarding press freedom.
