Kathmandu, May 14

The top leaders of the major political parties Monday committed that they were ready to promulgate the new constitution by May 27.

The term of the Constituent Assembly originally elected for two years in 2008 is expiring after four years on 27 this month.

After the meeting of the Dispute Resolution Sub-committee this morning, sub-committee coordinator and UCPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda ruled out the extension of the CA term and claimed that the new constitution would be promulgated by May 27.

"The CA tenure will not be extended, the constitution drafting task will be concluded by May 27," he said.

He also informed that the political parties were also serious about the situation and would cook something important by Monday evening.

Prachanda said that the constitution drafting task was going on even when the parties were busy holding intensive discussions to resolve the contentious

issues of the statute.

Nepali Congress vice chairman Ram Chandra Poudel also said the CA term would not be extended and the constitution would be promulgated within May 27.

He said there was no alternative to the promulgation the constitution from the CA and for that the parties were holding intensive discussions.

"A complete new constitution will be promulgated, not only the draft," he said. The meeting ended discussing the issues informally this morning.

However, the leaders agreed to hold decisive discussions among the political forces to build consensus on disputed issues of the constitution.

Meanwhile, the meetings of the Constituent Assembly and the Constitutional Committee slated for Monday were put off by issuing notices as the disputed issues of constitution were not resolved.

The CA meeting is scheduled for Tuesday while the CC has not fixed the date of its next meeting.
