Kathmandu, May 23:
UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ called on President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav on Wednesday and held discussion the President’s queries about extension of the Constituent Assembly tenure.
In the meeting held at the Rastrapati President’s Personal residence at Shital Niwas, discussions centred on recent political developments and agreement reached amongst the parties to extend the Constituent Assembly (CA) tenure.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Prachanda told reporters that he informed the President about the decision of extending the tenure of the CA by three months.
Prachanda said that he informed the President that his party had tried to promulgate the new constitution within May 27 by seeking consensus with other parties. However, the efforts were in vain, he said.
"As parties were left with no alternative but to extend the CA’s tenure in the present circumstance, it was finally forwarded for procedure," Prachanda told the President during the meeting.
The President was concerned about the situation that may arise after May 27, the deadline for constitution promulgation.
Press coordinator of Prachanda Santosh Paudel informed that President Yadav asked Prachanda to move ahead by heeding the aspiration of the people and the judiciary.
Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai had a meeting with the President on Tuesday. During the meeting, Bhattarai had briefed Yadav about the proposal to extend the term of the CA.
