Kathmandu, June 7:

Special envoy of United Nation Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Samuel Tamrat has held talks with the top leaders regarding the latest political developments of Nepal.

On Thursday, Tamrat called on Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Maoist chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Nepali Congress president Sushil Koirala.

The talks with Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai were held at the PM’s residence, Baluwatar.

The Prime Minister’s personal secretariat informed that envoy Tamrat expressed his curiosity about the latest political developments in Nepal. He expressed his sadness over the failure of the Constituent Assembly to promulgate the new constitution.

Likewise, Tamrat called on UCPN-Maoist Chairman Prachanda at latter’s residence, Lazimpat.

Tamrat and the Maoist chief held discussions on the latest political developments and the reasons behind the failure of the political parties to promulgate the new constitution.

Prachanda’s personal secretariat informed that the special envoy expressed his sadness over the failure to promulgate the new constitution through the Constituent Assembly.

Shiva Khakurel, Prachanda’s personal aide, informed that the envoy asked Prachanda to move ahead through consensus among the political parties during the meeting.

In response, Prachanda told Tamrat that the new constitution could not be promulgated owing to the stance taken by the opposition parties on federalism although the Maoist party adopted maximum flexibility to draft the statue through the CA.

"The government’s announcement of a fresh election was an obligatory move after the dissolution of the CA. Presently, discussions are continuing to seek better alternative," Khakurel quoted Prachanda as saying in the meet.

Prachanda assured the special envoy that the political parties will reach a consensus about the outlet of the crisis within a few days.

According to Khakurel, Prachanda admired the role played by the UN on Nepal’s peace and constitution writing process.

Tamrat told Prachanda that the UN Secretary General had expressed his sadness over the failure of the Nepalese political parties to promulgate the constitution.

However, Tamrat assured the Maoist chief that the UN assistance on peace, stability and development of Nepal would continue.

Meanwhile, Tamrat called on NC president Sushil Koirala at his personal residence at Maharajgunj.

NC leader Dr Ram Saran Mahat who accompanied Koirala in the meeting told reporters that envoy Tamrat suggested for a national consensus government.

Dr Mahat said that the UN envoy expressed his worries over the dissolution of the CA without promulgating the new constitution.
